Sleep and the Soul: Why Good Rest Matters for Your Health
As a nurse who has worked many night shifts, I know firsthand how sleep affects everything: mood, memory, immunity, even our patience with the people we love. Rest is one of the simplest and most overlooked gifts for our health.
What poor sleep does to the body
Consistently short or broken sleep is linked to higher stress, weaker immunity, difficulty concentrating, and a greater risk of long-term health problems. Your body does important repair work while you rest.
Habits that support better sleep
- Go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time each day.
- Keep screens away from your face for the last 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- Keep your room cool, dark, and quiet.
- Limit caffeine in the afternoon and evening.
- End the day with a short prayer or a few minutes of calm reading.
Sleep as trust
There is something deeply spiritual about lying down and trusting that God stays awake while we sleep. Every night, we practice letting go of control.
If sleep problems persist, please speak with a healthcare professional. Good rest is not a luxury; it is part of caring for the body God gave you.
