Managing Stress the Healthy Way: Lessons from the Ward
Stress is part of life, and it\'s certainly part of nursing. Over the years I\'ve seen what happens when stress is ignored, and I\'ve learned practical ways to manage it before it takes over.
How stress shows up
Stress can appear as tension headaches, poor sleep, irritability, stomach trouble, trouble concentrating, or feeling constantly overwhelmed. Recognizing these early signs helps you respond sooner.
Practical ways to ease it
- Take a few slow, deep breaths when you feel tension rising.
- Move your body; even a short walk can help.
- Talk to someone you trust instead of carrying everything alone.
- Break big tasks into smaller steps.
- Make space for prayer, quiet, and rest.
Know your limits
Saying no is not selfish; it protects your health and your ability to care for others well. You don\'t have to do everything.
When to seek help
If stress feels constant or overwhelming, or you notice signs of depression or anxiety, please reach out to a doctor or counselor. Asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
