Letting Go of Fear: Surrendering Control to God

Letting Go of Fear: Surrendering Control to God

There’s a story I’ll never forget about my friend, Temi, who had been struggling with the fear of losing control in her life. She was always the kind of person who liked to plan everything down to the last detail. If things didn’t go according to her plan, she’d panic, worrying about what might happen next.

One day, Temi came to me, visibly frustrated. “I’m trying so hard to keep everything in order—my career, my family, my finances—but it feels like nothing is going the way I want. I can’t keep up anymore. What if I lose everything?” she asked, her voice trembling.

I took a deep breath and told her, “Temi, you’re not in control of everything, but you serve a God who is.”

The Fear of Losing Control

One of the hardest things we face in life is the fear of losing control. We want to know exactly what will happen next, and when things don’t go as planned, fear creeps in. We fear failure, disappointment, and the unknown. But the truth is, we can’t control everything. And that’s okay.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This verse reminds us that it’s okay to pause, to let go of our need for control, and trust that God is in control. When we surrender to Him, we allow His peace to rule in our hearts, knowing that He has a perfect plan for our lives.

Why We Need to Surrender Our Fears

God Is Bigger Than Our Plans
It’s easy to get caught up in our own vision of how life should go, but God’s plans are always greater than our own. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” When we let go of our need to control everything, we open ourselves to God’s perfect will for our lives.

Control Is an Illusion
The truth is, we never really have full control over our lives. We can plan, we can prepare, but life often throws curveballs. And that’s okay. When we try to hold on too tightly, we only increase our fear and stress. Surrendering control to God is the ultimate act of faith and trust.

God Works in Our Weakness
Sometimes, when we let go of control, it’s in our moments of weakness that God’s strength shines the brightest. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” Our fear of losing control can be the very thing that allows God to work in us and through us in ways we never imagined.

How to Surrender Fear to God

1. Pray and Release Control
The first step is to admit that you can’t control everything. Take it to God in prayer and surrender your fears to Him. Let go of the worry and allow Him to take over.

2. Trust His Timing
Fear often comes when we don’t see things happening on our own timeline. But remember, God’s timing is always perfect. Trust that He knows what’s best for you, even if it’s not what you expected.

3. Focus on the Present
Worrying about the future or obsessing over the past can steal your peace. Focus on today, and take one step at a time with God by your side. Matthew 6:34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

Temi’s Journey of Surrender

Temi eventually realized that she couldn’t carry the weight of her life on her own. After a few months of letting go and allowing God to take control, she began to see changes. Her stress levels dropped, her relationships improved, and she felt a sense of peace she hadn’t experienced in years. “I’m learning to trust God with the things I can’t control,” she told me one day. “It’s freeing.”

Just like Temi, you can experience the peace that comes from surrendering your fears and letting God take control. Life may not always go as you expect, but when you trust God, you can rest assured that He is leading you in the best direction.

Conclusion: Surrender to Find Peace

When you release your fears and surrender your need for control to God, you’ll find a peace that surpasses understanding. Fear loses its grip on you when you place your trust in the One who holds your future. Let go, and let God lead you.

Prayer:
“Lord, I surrender my fears and my need to control everything. I trust that You know what’s best for me, and I choose to let go and trust in Your perfect plan. Give me peace and the strength to follow You wherever You lead me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
