Facing Fear: Finding Courage in God's Promises
We’ve all felt it—fear. That heavy, suffocating feeling that creeps in when we’re about to face the unknown or when life takes an unexpected turn. It could be the fear of failure, fear of the future, or even fear of letting others down.
I remember talking to Ngozi, a young woman in my community, who was about to start a new job. Despite being qualified and capable, she was terrified. “I feel like I’m not good enough,” she told me. “What if I mess up? What if they don’t like me?”
I smiled and reminded her that fear is something we all experience, but we don’t have to let it control us. “Remember,” I said, “God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
Why We Experience Fear
Fear is a natural part of life—it’s our brain’s way of protecting us from harm. But sometimes, the fear we feel is not based on reality. It’s based on “what ifs” and imagined scenarios. God didn’t create us to live in constant fear. He wants us to live with courage, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” This means that fear doesn’t have to rule our lives. We have been given power, love, and clarity of mind to overcome fear.
How to Overcome Fear
1. Face Your Fears Head-On
The only way to conquer fear is to face it. Whether it’s speaking in public, trying something new, or trusting God with your future, take small steps toward what scares you. The more you face your fears, the smaller they’ll become.
2. Trust in God’s Promises
Whenever fear begins to creep in, remember the promises God has made to you. Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” His presence with you is greater than any fear you face.
3. Change Your Focus
Instead of focusing on your fear, shift your attention to what God is doing in your life. Remind yourself of past victories and how He’s shown up for you before. When you focus on His faithfulness, fear loses its grip on you.
4. Speak God’s Word Over Your Fear
There’s power in the Word of God. When fear comes, speak God’s promises out loud. Say, “I am more than a conqueror through Christ who strengthens me” (Romans 8:37) and “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not fear” (Psalm 23:1).
Conclusion: Embrace Courage
Ngozi started her new job with fear in her heart, but as she leaned on God’s promises and took it one step at a time, she began to thrive. Months later, she shared how her confidence had grown and how she no longer let fear control her decisions.
Just like Ngozi, you can overcome fear by trusting in God’s strength. Fear doesn’t have to be your story. With God, you have the courage to face anything life throws at you.
Prayer:
“Lord, I know fear is a natural feeling, but I choose to trust in Your promises. Help me to overcome my fears and to step boldly into the future You have for me. Thank You for Your strength and peace that go beyond my understanding. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
